Associate Chair for Research and Woodruff Professor

George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and Sam Nunn School of International Affairs

Anna Erickson is a sought-after expert on the potential benefits and risks of nuclear energy.

Anna Erickson鈥檚 work focuses on bridging a critical gap between the reactor engineering and nuclear nonproliferation communities by integrating theoretical reactor analysis and design and experimental detection. She serves as director for the Consortium for Enabling Technologies and Innovation, a group of 12 universities and 12 national laboratories tasked with developing new technologies and educational programs to support the U.S. Department of Energy鈥檚 nuclear science, security, and nonproliferation goals. She is also a co-author of Active Interrogation in Nuclear Security: Science, Technology, and Systems, published by Nature Springer, and more than 100 journal publications, conference proceedings, and presentations.

For nearly 2 decades, Grand Canyon tourists were exposed to radiation beyond the federal limit, safety manager says

CNN

Anna Erickson, associate professor of nuclear and radiological engineering at 色花堂, said the uranium exposure at the museum is unlikely to have been hazardous to visitors.

鈥淯ranium ore contains natural (unenriched) uranium which emits relatively low amounts of radiation,鈥 Erickson said. 鈥淕iven the extremely low reading (zero above background) 5 feet away from the bucket, I鈥檓 skeptical there could be any health hazards associated with visiting the exhibit.鈥

鈥淭he gamma rays of different energies interact with the material in very different ways,鈥 Anna Erickson, an assistant mechanical engineering professor at 色花堂, says. 鈥淎nd how the signals are attenuated will be a very good indicator of what the atomic number of the hidden material is, and its potential density.鈥
